Kashmir remains out of bounds as fresh snowfall halts road, air traffic | KNO

Srinagar, January 05 (KNO) : Amid fresh snowfall across the Valley, Kashmir remained cut off with rest of the country as all the means including roads and air traffic remained suspended for second straight day. However, the air traffic as per officials resumed in the afternoon but the morning flights remained suspended in view of poor visibility. The fresh snowfall though brought cheer among the Valleyties but at the same time people in Rural as well as Urban areas faced immense hardships in absence of electricity while as in some areas, the water supply had also got affected. Kashmir received the fresh snowfall in the second phase of the already forecasted western disturbances that as per MeT department was affecting Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh in two phases from January 01-02 and January 04-06. Under the influence of the second phase of western disturbance, the heavy snowfall started in the Valley including Srinagar on Friday afternoon. The MeT officials said that the weather conditions would improve across the Valley from Sunday afternoon. “There is no forecast of any wet spell from Sunday onwards till the end of this week,” he said. However, he said that the MeT has forecasted cloudy weather in between Jan 08-09, saying that there is possibility of rainfall in higher reaches in between Jan 08-09. The MeT department had earlier forecasted major wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh, saying that two Western disturbances are affecting J&K in two phases from Jan 01-04 and Jan 04-06. Meanwhile, the divisional administration has started work on war footing basis to ensure every basic facility to the people of Kashmir. Earlier, the district administration had set up control rooms here, asking people to contact in case of any assistance. Notably, the traffic on Srinagar-Jammu highway and other major roads continued to remain suspended for the second consecutive day here due to the fresh snowfall across the Valley. The officials said that the traffic will be allowed to ply after the snow accumulated on the roads will be cleared to ensure safety of the travelers. The other roads including Bandipora-Gurez and Srinagar-Kargil continued to remain closed for the vehicular movement for the third straight day. The roads were closed following the fresh snowfall in the Valley on Jan 02. It is worth to mention here that the morning flights in Kashmir were also suspended in Srinagar while as the operation was resumed in the afternoon.(KNO)
